Mt. Veeder

After devastating forest fires in 2017, a family wanted to rebuild their beloved escape in a redwood-covered site in the hills above Napa, California. Their new, smaller, 700-sq-ft cabin opens up to Napa Valley views and a large deck enables them to double their living space during most of the year. In compliance with new fire codes, the house is clad completely in fire-resistant materials, which brings a new set of design opportunities as well as challenges. The choice of black steel siding blends into the charred bark of the enduring redwood trees that surround the new home.
